Marriage and Lasting Connection

Marriage Challenges: How to Strengthen Your Relationship Through Difficult Seasons

Marriage changes as life changes. Stronger connection often requires new skills, intentional attention, and a willingness to understand one another.

Marriage changes as life piles on: careers, children, money, aging parents, and the endless logistics of running a household.

For some couples, the pressure shows up as the same argument on repeat. For others, it is quieter. One day, two people realize they have become efficient roommates who occasionally remember to kiss goodbye.

These guides explore practical ways to understand recurring challenges, strengthen connection, and recognize when outside support may be appropriate.

The Short Version

Six Ways to Strengthen a Struggling Marriage

Progress often develops through small, respectful changes practiced consistently—not one perfect conversation.

Safety first: If your marriage involves threats, coercion, or violence, joint communication exercises may be inappropriate. Prioritize safety and qualified support. In the United States, visit thehotline.org or call 800-799-7233.

01

Look Beneath the Fight

Notice recurring patterns underneath the latest disagreement.

02

Take Turns Listening

Give each person space to describe their experience without interruption.

03

Raise Concerns Respectfully

Discuss specific behaviors instead of making character attacks.

04

Create Small Moments

Protect brief periods of attention and connection amid daily responsibilities.

05

Choose One Shared Habit

Agree on a manageable practice both partners are willing to try.

06

Seek Support When Needed

Consider qualified professional support when problems persist or become unsafe.

How to Find Love: What Research Says Actually Helps

October 20, 2026•4 min read

Ben was thirty-four and tired of hearing that love would find him once he stopped looking. He wasn’t sure what “stop looking” meant in practice, and he didn’t want to sit at home waiting to be discovered.

Research can’t promise anyone a partner. It can tell you a lot about how people actually meet and what helps.

Where couples meet today

How people meet has changed fast. A nationally representative survey found that about 39 percent of heterosexual couples who met in 2017 met online, making it the most common way to meet, ahead of meeting through friends (Rosenfeld et al., 2019). For same-sex couples, the figure was about 65 percent.

Friends, work, shared activities, and community still bring many couples together. If you’ve avoided online dating entirely, though, you’re skipping the channel most new couples now use.

Why chemistry is hard to predict

Dating apps promise to match people using questionnaires. In two speed-dating studies, Samantha Joel, Paul Eastwick, and Eli Finkel (2017) collected more than 100 traits and preferences from each participant before they met. A machine-learning model could partly predict how much a person liked others in general, and how much others liked them. It couldn’t predict which specific pairs would click.

The practical lesson: profiles are a way to meet people. You still have to meet them.

Practical steps for finding love

Increase the number of real conversations

More genuine interactions mean more chances to meet someone you connect with. Join something that meets regularly, such as a class, team, or volunteer group, where you see the same people week after week.

Use apps as introductions

Move from messaging to a short meeting within a reasonable time. Long pen-pal stretches build a picture of someone the real person may not match.

Let friends help

Tell people you trust that you’re open to meeting someone. Introductions through friends have become less common as apps have grown, and they still work.

Work on the relationship you’ll bring

Finding love is partly about meeting the right person and partly about being ready to build something with them. Understanding how you handle stress and conflict now will save a future relationship a lot of pain.

Stay open to surprise

The person you connect with may not match the picture in your head. Give a second date to people who feel good to be around.

When finding love feels discouraging

Long stretches of being single are common and say nothing about your worth. If loneliness is weighing on you, investing in friendships and community helps your well-being now and widens the circle of people you’ll meet.

Safety note: If you feel afraid of your partner, or the relationship includes threats, control, monitoring, or violence, general relationship advice isn’t the right starting point. Contact a domestic violence resource or a qualified professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do most couples meet today?

In a nationally representative U.S. survey, meeting online was the most common way heterosexual couples who met in 2017 got together, at about 39 percent. For same-sex couples, it was about 65 percent.

Can a dating app predict who I’ll fall for?

Not reliably. Research using more than 100 pre-date measures couldn’t predict which specific pairs would feel mutual attraction. Meeting in person remains essential.

How do I find love when I’m tired of dating?

Take breaks when you need them, focus on activities where you meet people naturally, let friends introduce you, and keep investing in your own life.
