Unhealthy Relationship Signs: 10 Warning Signs of a Toxic Relationship

October 30, 2026•4 min read

Every relationship has hard days. An unhealthy relationship is different: one person regularly feels afraid, controlled, belittled, or unable to be themselves. The warning signs often start small and grow over time, which is why they can be so hard to see from the inside.

Ordinary Conflict vs. Control

In ordinary conflict, two people disagree and both can still speak freely. In an unhealthy relationship, one person uses fear, guilt, or pressure to control the other. The CDC includes coercive control, meaning behavior intended to monitor, control, or threaten a partner, within psychological aggression, one of four types of intimate partner violence (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2026).

10 Warning Signs of an Unhealthy Relationship

1. You feel afraid of your partner’s reactions

You plan conversations around avoiding their anger, or you feel relief when they’re away.

2. They monitor you

They check your phone, track your location, or demand your passwords.

3. They isolate you

They discourage or prevent time with friends and family, or make those visits so unpleasant that you stop going.

4. They control money

They limit your access to money or make every financial decision for you.

5. They insult or humiliate you

Name-calling, mocking, or putting you down, in private or in front of others.

6. They threaten you

Threats to leave, to hurt you, to hurt themselves, or to take the children.

7. Jealousy turns into rules

Accusations and restrictions about who you can see, text, or talk to.

8. Everything is your fault

Their behavior is always explained as a reaction to something you did.

9. Your memory gets denied

They insist that things you clearly remember never happened, until you start doubting yourself.

10. Any physical or sexual harm

Pushing, grabbing, hitting, blocking your way out, or pressure into sexual activity. None of it is ever acceptable.

The 5 Warning Signs to Take Most Seriously

If you want the short list: fear, monitoring, isolation, threats, and any physical harm. Any one of these deserves attention. Several together call for safety planning with a trained advocate.
